Free Adult English Programs

Language Instruction for Newcomers to Canada (LINC)

The Language Instruction for Newcomers to Canada (LINC) Program provides free adult English classes to permanent residents, live-in caregivers and convention refugees. These classes assist with the settlement process and help newcomers learn English. Contact the New Canadians Centre to book an appointment with a Settlement Counsellor and complete a free language assessment.

English as a Second Language (ESL) Program

The ESL program offers free adult English classes at Peterborough Alternative Continuing Education (PACE) to Canadian citizens, Convention refugees, refugee claimants, approved provincial nominees, and live-in caregivers. Currently, the classes are for beginner English students. Contact the New Canadians Centre to book an appointment with a Settlement Counsellor and complete a free language assessment.

Learning English at the New Canadians Centre

The New Canadians Centre has adult beginner, immediate, and advanced English groups, as well as conversation groups. The beginner and intermediate groups have free childcare available. You can also meet with a tutor who will work with you one-on-one. All the NCC English learning programs are free and open to all newcomers. Contact the New Canadians Centre for more information about programs and times. You need to register for the advanced English group.

ITCH Conversation Circle

The ITCH is a free English conversation circle run by Trent Valley International Coffee House. It is open to all newcomers. ITCH is held at Sadleir House. You should register by emailing [email protected].

Trent University ESL Program

Trent University offers ESL classes for international students. The English for University program is an intensive academic English language program that provides total immersion in the English speaking community and a strong foundation for university and professional success. Students who successfully complete the English for University program can move directly into a full-time undergraduate degree program at Trent ($).

Fleming College ESL Program

The English As A Second Language Bridge Program is an intensive full-time academic English program at Fleming College that integrates all language skills in order to prepare English Language Learners for post-secondary studies. Students who successfully complete the ELB program can move directly into a Full-Time Program at Fleming College ($).

International ESL Learning Centre

The Language Learning Centre of Peterborough offers non-formal language learning for all levels and ages through online and self-directed studies. Trips are organized at various locations, such as Niagara and the Royal Ontario Museum. Join by coming to the centre ($).
