Labour market Information

Knowing about the employment prospects in a city or region is extremely important when deciding where to live. Before coming to Peterborough you should find out if employers are hiring people with your skills set and training.

Labour market information can help you learn about what types of jobs are available in a given region. It can also provide information on salaries, job prospects and trends. Labour market information is often difficult to obtain, to keep current, and to translate into easily understood language. This section provides different ways of finding out if there are jobs available in specific fields in the City of Peterborough. 

Labour market information concerning specific professions is often best obtained from someone already working in that particular profession.  You can contact an employer from your profession within the Peterborough area and ask them what the current and future labour market is or is expected to be for that field.  Use the following business directories to learn about different business fields in the Peterborough area:

A great way to determine if jobs exist in your profession is to actually search for job postings in your sector.  Generally, your job prospects are better if there are many jobs advertised in your sector.  In contrast, a scarcity in advertised jobs in your sector may indicate a labour market where it is difficult to find work in your profession.

The Integrated Local Labour Market Plan (ILLMP) is a community-development process intended to increase the supply of labour and address labour demand by working with employers to identify and meet their current and future skills needs. The ILLMP is headed by the Workforce Development Board, a community-based, not-for-profit corporation which works with the community to identify trends and opportunities in the labour market. The Workforce Development Board publishes Workforce Focus, which focuses on emerging and established sectors and other employment trends in the Peterborough area. 

The Service Canada Labour Market Monitor is a monthly overview of the Muskoka-Kawarthas Economic Region and includes Peterborough labour-market data.

The Ontario Labour Market Guide is published by the Ontario government. The guide explains how to find and use labour market information. It includes definitions and information on interpreting labour market data and provides information on the supply of, and demand for, labour in Ontario communities.
